Student Furnished Course Supplies/Prerequisites: Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms Ernest Hemingway, For Whom the Bell Tolls

Course Description: Hemingway’s life was deeply affected by war. He was wounded in WW I, and he experienced the Spanish Civil War and WW II as a war correspondent. We will read and discuss two books: For Whom the Bell Tolls, and A Farewell to Arms. Discussion topics may include but are not limited to: how war is portrayed, effects of war, and war trauma and wounds. We may also discuss: Hemingway’s actions in war, other war writers and Hemingway, influences on his war perspectives, and his war correspondence. The course will end with a discussion on the class's opinion of the books.

Course Instructor: Melissa Maughan is a Staff Assistant in the Utah State University's History department. She graduated with a BA in History from USU in 2013 with a specialization in US History 1900-1945 with an emphasis in Japanese Internment. She has an MA in English from USU with a specialization in rhetoric. She has a special interest in naturalism and classic literature, both fiction and nonfiction.
