Course Description: People living in Utah territory asked Congress 6 times for statehood. They were denied and Congress inflicted major penalties. Why did it take 47 years? Why was 1/3 of the pre-Civil War US Army deployed to Utah? Responses to these questions and others you’ve never even asked will be answered as we discuss this topic. On Friday we’ll travel to Camp Floyd, where Johnston's Army was based. We’ll then bus to camp Douglas where Patrick Connor's men were stationed. We’ll get to see homes built with money generated in the mining industry--including our Utah Governor's Mansion.

Course Instructor: Lucille Hansen thinks everything makes more sense if history is understood. Her favorite classes to teach were history --especially Utah History. Shes loves the Summer Citizen Program and looks forward to greeting everyone.
