Course Description: America's long history of illicit imports has ranged from West Indies Molasses and Dutch gunpowder in the 18th century to British industrial technologies and African slaves in the 19th century, to French condoms and Canadian booze in the early 20th century to Mexican workers and Columbian cocaine in the modern era. Contraband capitalism, it turns out, has been an integral part of American Capitalism. I recommend that you read "Smuggler Nation, How Illicit Trade made America", by Peter Andreas. Class members will be asked to report on different examples of illicit trade.

Course Instructor: Rick Ernst is a retired financial advisor who specialized in retirement planning and since retirement has led Osher Lifelong Learning Classes at the University of Arizona on subjects like Investing 101; Investing 201; Smuggler Nation, How Illicit Trade made America; and the Battle for the Soul of Capitalism. This course is aimed at people who are interested in how the economy works
