Course Description: This course will cover Shoshone history from when they were one nation numbering 70,000 to when they divided into geographical areas and smaller bands. We will cover their hunting/gathering way of life. We will discuss the impact of the Mormon pioneer settlers who expanded north from the Salt Lake Valley. We will discuss the impact this expansion had and what conflicts occurred because of their ways of life. We will also discuss the Bear River Massacre, both the cause and outcome of this horrific event. We will conclude with a discussion on the conversion of the survivors to the Mormon faith.

Course Instructor: Darren Parry is an enrolled member of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation where he serves as the Chairman of the tribe. He has served his people for more than 10 years. He received his BS in Education from Weber State University and served as an Adjunct Professor at Weber State University. He is the Great Great Great Grandson of Chief Sagwitch who was the Chief during the Bear River Massacre. The Shoshone perspective needs to be heard.
