111 - Acting: Scene Study

Student Furnished Course Supplies/Prerequisites: One notebook and plenty of pencils. Participants must be willing to perform in front of the class.

Course Description: Part 1 introduces acting theory and method based on the work of Constantine Stanislavski. Instruction is given in breaking a scene into beats and identifying objectives, obstacles, and actions. Part 2 of the course is hands-on scene study. The class will be divided into groups of two, and each group will be assigned a scene written by a modern playwright (post 1930). Each group will rehearse their scenes outside of class and present them in class to receive notes. The class will end with a performance of all the scenes. 20 slots are open to participants. Others may join as observers.

Course Instructor: Richie Call is an Assistant Professor of Acting at Utah State University in the Caine College of the Arts. He is also an online instructor at Rutgers University, Mason Gross School of the Arts where he received his MFA in Acting. In addition to Richie's teaching positions, he is also a Co-Artistic Director of the Lyric Repertory Company where he has performed and directed for 16 seasons. Richie is a proud member of the Actors' Equity Association.
