Course Description: Finding reliable facts has become very difficult despite the information available on the internet. What are some of the tricks of the deception trade? "If it's scary, be wary" and "beware of the superlative swindle and how euphemisms deceive" are some of the subjects discussed. We will also discuss a list of reliable websites that separate fact from fiction, where to find reliable nutrition information, and a guide to quackery! What is the role of public relations firms, journalists and lobbyists in forming our opinions? What is the role of investigative journalism?

Course Instructor: Rick Ernst is a retired financial advisor who specialized in retirement planning and since retirement has led Osher Lifelong Learning Classes at the University of Arizona on subjects like Investing 101; Investing 201; Smuggler Nation, How Illicit Trade made America; and the Battle for the Soul of Capitalism.
