115 - Astronomy for Beginners

Course Description: We’ll cover the history of astronomy and learn about constellations. We’ll study the solar system, especially the moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and its moon, and Pluto. Learn about the search for other solar systems and how our solar system formed. Learn about our sun and other galaxies, star clusters, and double stars. We’ll discuss recent advances in cosmology (origins of the universe and the Big Bang), and the search for life on other Earthlike planets (exoplanets). There will be an evening star party at Heritage Park in Nibley with telescopes from the Cache Valley Astronomical Society.

Course Instructor: Tom Westre is a retired public school educator with 33 years of teaching experience at the high school level. Tom received his bachelors and masters degree in education from the University of South Dakota. Tom has taught US History at the high school level for 30 years. Tom has researched the JFK assassination for over 25 years. He visited Dallas in 2013 talking to important witnesses and researchers of that event. Tom has taught several courses on the JFK assassination.
